Learn More: Newsletters: Summer 2006
Hi All,
Summer is almost officially here and we still don't have a "formal" Further Shore/Wayne's House newsletter. But I hope you enjoy reading about how we are doing here in Flagstaff. May you enjoy the beauty of summer's fullness; appreciating every moment of sunshine or monsoon rain. Take time to smell the flowers and have a few lazy dog day afternoons. In Gratitude, Aleia

Summer Calendar
Our summer calendar includes Movie Night, Retreat Programs, and information about the conditional use permit renewal process. If you would like to schedule a program at Wayne's House with your partner, family or with a group, here are dates available this summer: Due to conditional use restrictions and my travel schedule, these are the only dates available this summer. The options for programs currently are Gentle Transitions (24 hours beginning on a Friday or a Saturday) or Saving Grace (48 hours beginning on Friday).

If you wish to be a part of a group, please email your name, phone number and the date you would like to attend. Please do not let financial challenges stop you for requesting a program. Program Update
I am proud to report that with your help, we have been able to serve thirteen clients at the residence and another four with phone and email support. Clients have ranged in age from thirty to seventy-five, and included men and women, those who have life threatening illness and pain, those who have concerns and fears about caring for their aging or ill family members, and those who are grieving. Most of our clients qualify for scholarship support as they are financially challenged. Here is what some of our clients said about their time at Wayne’s House:
  • "This is something that everyone needs to go through to graduate as an adult. I have a whole new framework for looking at loss and grief."
  • "I learned to be more relaxed and less fearful about dying and my illness. A wonderful experience. I feel very blessed."
  • "I felt completely nurtured and supported, loved and cherished. Thank you for making this space available at a time when I needed it most."
Wayne's House - Update
The house is now fully outfitted with ragtime quilts. The lavender and gold room quilts were placed in May and they are so colorful and full of good energy! Thanks again to Merry Byrd for generous gift of fabric, time, sewing machines and LOVE; and to the nine others who worked so lovingly on the quilts. Thanks as well for the gift of books and a lamp for the lavender room. This gift came from a woman in our community who passed on recently from breast cancer. Her family's generosity is appreciated and the gifts will have a special place at Wayne's House.

Further Shore will be re-applying for a conditional use permit with the County very soon. The schedule is this:
  • June 14th - meeting with Bill Towler
  • July 15th - open house for neighbors only at Wayne's House
  • August 14th - submit application and fees
  • September 26th - Public Hearing with the Commissioners
  • (November 14th - Public Hearing with the Board of Supervisors, if it is determined that is required).
Last year it took about 100 hours to put the application together and then deal with the neighborhood's  opposition. Their greatest concerns seemed to be about traffic, noise and property values going down. I am hopeful that this year, we have proved to be good, quiet neighbors and we can have a successful hearing that will result in a more flexible conditional use permit.

You can help with a letter of support. If you have been served by Further Shore directly (in a program) or via our emails, website or printed materials, please let us know in writing by July 30th. Letters of support may be sent Further Shore, Inc. P. O. Box 23518, Flagstaff, AZ  86002. or by email at info@furthershore.org

Client Update
This spring Further Shore served several clients referred from family, friends and other agencies. Service is in the form of prayer, retreats, resources, information and hands on support for the ill, dying or grieving. If you have a service that may be useful for clients, please let us know.

Community Update
Another visitor to Wayne's House in April was Craig Meriwether. Another wonderful networker, Craig is putting together an on line calendar for ethnic and cultural arts programs in Northern Arizona. You can get on his email list at info@nazethnicarts.org

In May I met with Deb Darby, President of the Sedona Chapter of End of Life Choices-Arizona.  Find out about the Million Geezer March and the work of this organization at www.choicesarizona.org  I also visited the beautiful retreat facility in Sedona called Angel Valley. The facility is dedicated to spiritual inquiry. http://www.angelvalley.org/

Senior Health and Fitness Day was held at the Radisson Hotel in May. It was a wonderful day with the several hundred seniors and connection with many local agencies that help seniors. We handed out information, rainbow ribbons and chocolate (a big hit). I met Charlotte Fox who authored a book called "and then there was one - A Tactical Survival Workbook Following the Loss of a Spouse, Life Partner or Loved One"
This book is amazing, comprehensive and lovingly written. You can contact Charlotte at 928-525-1527 or email at GrandCFox@msn.com

The Twilight Brigade Compassion in Action training was held in April. Our trainer, Peter Hill and his team included his wife, Jennifer, and Connie Sarff; all drove up for the weekend from Phoenix. The training was nothing short of amazing. Participants learned about hospice history, philosophy and standard of care. We also learned about the responsibilities and activities of the hospice volunteer. More than this, we were up close and personal with our own mortality. Peter facilitates this training with focus, clarity, grace, and compassion.  We now have eleven nationally certified Twilight Brigade volunteers in our Flagstaff community. The volunteers are willing to assist families in transition. Questions may be directed to info@furthershore.org  We plan to host another training in the Spring of 2007. I highly recommend it!

 “That’s Life! – A Bone Dance”
Event will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at Forest Highlands from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Ticket price includes entry to the event featuring photos and mementos of your loved ones, raffle, silent auction, a Story Corner, Mexican food buffet, dinner and dancing, cash bar. Music by Limbs Akimbo! Cost is $100/couple or $55/person.

That’s Life is held to honor and celebrate our loved ones who have passed on. Drawing from the Mexican tradition of Dias de los Muertes (Day of the Dead) celebration, a large altar will be available and decorated with colorful fabrics. Bring a photo or memento of your departed loved one to place on the altar for the evening. In the Story Corner you can record a favorite memory or short story (3-5 minutes) about your loved one’s life – how did they inspire or touch you in life? How does their legacy make you a better person? The tape will be available to purchase post-event. Funds raised will provide education, support, and respite for people facing serious or chronic illness and end of life concerns.

Dedications
Our web site will soon have a place for dedications. If you would like to have your loved one mentioned in the Summer Newsletter, please email us at Aleia@furthershore.org. For this newsletter, I offer a dedication and ask a prayer in loving memory and in honor of more than 2,000 fallen American men and women and the thousands of Iraqi people who have died in battle. And we pray for peace.

Must See Movies
If you have a movie you feel speaks to our mission, please send us a review! This quarter's pic is Dragonfly starring Kevin Cosner, Kathy Bates, and Linda Hunt. Billed as a supernatural thriller that is full of surprises and adventure. Cosner's character, distraught over the loss of his wife in an accident, begins to have messages and unsettling encounters with her spirit. The journey is one of love's eternal triumph over death.

Recipe from the Food Doctor
Summer is a great time for fresh zucchini. . . easy to prepare and delicious! Enjoy.

     Gone From My Sight
I am standing on the seashore.  A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.  She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch her until at length she is a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says, There!  She's gone!"  Gone where?  Gone from my sight, that is all.  She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side, and she is just as able to bear her load of living weight to her destined harbor.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.  And just at the moment when someone at my side says, There! She's gone! there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "There she comes!" And that is dying.
